January 17, 2007

I haven’t posted anything here for a while because I’ve been rather tied up.

On the evening of Monday, January 8, I was barefoot and carrying a small water-filled bowl across a ceramic tile floor. In a moment that may forever remain a mystery to me, I somehow spilled some of the water in the course of taking one step, and promptly stepped in the water spot with the next.

Down I went. The thud was sickening. My daughter heard the crash and came running. But it was too late. The damage had been done. I had landed squarely on my right hip. It was broken.

On Wednesday, January 10, I underwent a complete hip joint replacement surgery. The UT Southwestern orthopaedic surgeons did a great job of putting me back together. At my insistence, and with the surgeon’s blessing, I was discharged two days following the surgery – a record, I’m told.

My cancer treatments continue to go well.

I apologize for my brevity here. My energy level is very low. Even putting together this post was taxing. I’ll try to write more next week.
